Everyone knows that drinking and driving is dangerous but did you know that in around a third of fatal car crashes either a driver or a pedestrian is intoxicated? Over a million drivers are arrested every year for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol and of those who die in car crashes around 4,000 test positive for drugs.
For teenagers the figures are even more sobering. The leading cause of death for teens is a car crash and in around 25% of those crashes the driver has been drinking, and usually underage.
And many people drink and do not get caught and manage not to cause an accident with around 30 million people admitting every year that they have driven while under the influence of alcohol. Even worse around 10 million people over the age of 12 say they have driven under the influence of drugs.
Alcohol or drugs do not go together with driving as it makes the driver less attentive and less able to make decisions which turn what should be a reasonably safe activity into a potentially lethal one.
