On Wednesday, July 13, Kansas City police stated they were no longer investigating a fatal crash on the 150 Highway as a homicide.
The previous day, witnesses said that they saw a Red Chevrolet Suburban weaving along the highway near Botts road at around 7.15 a.m. before making a U turn, crossing the median, heading in the opposite direction and then crashing into a ditch on the median. When police arrived, the victim, 22 year old Preston Barnett was rushed to hospital suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen, but he later died.
As police investigated they discovered a firearm in the vehicle which was discovered to be stolen as well as the vehicle itself. They originally believed that the man had been shot while driving but have now said they do not believe that to be the case and are now treating it as a death investigation rather than a homicide.
They reminded that you should not drive if injured but should stop the vehicle and call 911.
