Independence Man Dies in Wrong Way Car Accident

On Friday evening, December 9, a man from Independence man died in a wrong way car accident near Lone Jack, Mo.

According to the Missouri Highway patrol, the accident happened just after 9:30 p.m. on eastbound U.S. 50 in eastern Jackson County. David M. Parton, aged 40, was driving a Ford Focus westbound in the eastbound lane of the highway when it collided with an eastbound Jeep Compass driven by 63 year old Linda Terry, of Lone Jack. Parton, who was not wearing a seat belt, was killed in the crash and Terry suffered serious injuries and was taken to Research Medical Center by helicopter where she was said to be in critical condition.

The investigation states that Parton was driving the wrong direction along Highway 50 for around two minutes before he crashed into Terry. The accident is still under investigation.

Man From Independence Dies At Recreation And Tourism Venue

On Friday, November 9, a man from Independence died at one of Seymour’s top recreation and tourism venues.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol the accident happened at around 6.45 p.m.at the Southern Missouri Off-Road Ranch, located about five miles south of Seymour off Highway K. Anthony J. Fjeld, age 59, was helping to direct a driver when 57 year old Wayne L. Rasmussen was backing his 1977 Ford Bronco. When Rasmussen saw Fjeld standing in the way of his vehicle he tried to stop but pressed the accelerator rather than the brake and ran over Fjeld and then hit the Ford F 350 truck which Fjeld was directing.

Fjeld was pronounced dead shortly after 8 p.m. at Mercy Hospital in Springfield which is the 97th motor-vehicle fatality this year in the patrol’s Troop D region.

Two Men Killed in Rollover Accident in Rural Clay County

On Thursday, October 14, two men were killed following a crash in rural Clay County.

According to authorities the crash happened shortly before 4 p.m. on State Highway H, just to the east of County Road, A 1998 Lincoln being driven by 22 year old Zachary D. Jordan of Excelsior Springs, was traveling eastbound when Jordan failed to negotiate a left turn and the Lincoln left the roadway, struck a road sign, went airborne and crashed into a tree. The vehicle then flipped and ended up in a pond on its roof.

Jordan died at the scene along with his 19 year old passenger, Andrew B. Selby, also of Excelsior.

According to the Missouri Highway Patrol, Jordan was not wearing a seat belt, and the accident is still under investigation although at this time the cause is not yet known.

Man Dies in Crash with Dump Truck

On Tuesday afternoon, September 20, a man died in a crash with a dump truck in Kansas City Missouri.

According to Kansas City police the accident happened at I-435 and 23rd Street at around noon. A gray Toyota Tundra being driven by 65 year old James L. Barringer, of Kansas City, was traveling northbound on the Interstate in a construction zone and for reasons unknown veered left into the center median. It then hit the center cable barrier and continued northbound between the bridges where it vaulted onto East 23rd Street, hitting a westbound Kenworth dump truck.

Barringer was taken to hospital where he died shortly after his arrival. The driver of the dump truck was also seriously injured and was taken to an area hospital where his current condition is unknown.

The wreck is under investigation.

Single Vehicle Motorcycle Crash Injures Two

On Friday, August 5, an elderly Kansas man was seriously injured in a single vehicle motorcycle crash.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the accident happened shortly before 11 p.m. on the Interstate 29 in the southbound lanes at mile marker 89 which is five miles north of Mound City.

Samuel B. Little, aged 69 and of Lenexa, Kansas was operating the 2015 Harley-Davidson motorcycle and was following an unidentifiable second vehicle. Something from the unit the second vehicle was towing fell into the roadway and Little hit it with his motorcycle.

Little and his passenger, 65 year old Constance L. Harrell, of Shawnee, Kansas, who were both wearing helmets, were ejected and slid along the southbound lanes. They were both taking to Mosaic Life Care Hospital where Little is said to be fair and Harrell has moderate injuries.

The second vehicle did not stop and continued driving south.

Man Dies in Fatal Crash Due to Gunshot

On Wednesday, July 13, Kansas City police stated they were no longer investigating a fatal crash on the 150 Highway as a homicide.

The previous day, witnesses said that they saw a Red Chevrolet Suburban weaving along the highway near Botts road at around 7.15 a.m. before making a U turn, crossing the median, heading in the opposite direction and then crashing into a ditch on the median. When police arrived, the victim, 22 year old Preston Barnett was rushed to hospital suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen, but he later died.

As police investigated they discovered a firearm in the vehicle which was discovered to be stolen as well as the vehicle itself. They originally believed that the man had been shot while driving but have now said they do not believe that to be the case and are now treating it as a death investigation rather than a homicide.

They reminded that you should not drive if injured but should stop the vehicle and call 911.

Man Killed in Motorcycle Crash on Wedding Day

On Saturday morning, June 4, a man died in a motorcycle crash on the day of his wedding just outside of Kansas City.

According to authorities the accident happened when 31 year old Gabriel Spiva of Independence, Missouri was having his bachelor party on Friday night, the eve of his wedding. Police said that Gabriel was on his motorcycle going very fast, a car pulled out in front of him, and he had to swerve, lost control, and went into a slide, and hit a parked car. He was taken to hospital but he did not regain consciousness and died shortly after.

His wife to be, Brandilyn Borron, also of Indepence was due to meet him at 11 a.m. in the morning for their wedding. They had been together for 17 years and had two children together and had finally decided to marry. The children are 2 year old Charlee and 5 year old Elliana.

One of the reasons for choosing the date they did is that it was the same date that Spiva’s mother’s father died in 1967.

Tractor Trailer Overturned on the Interstate

On Friday morning, May 13 a tractor trailer overturned on the 1 435 leaving one person injured.

According to police the accident happened around 9.45 a.m. when the tractor-trailer overturned in the northbound lanes of I-435 just south of Raytown Road. The accident involved three vehicles in total and lead to the tractor trailer spilling gravel across the highway. It is thought, according to witnesses that two black cars were possibly racing and weaving in and out of the traffic and they may have caused the accident.

Police shut down the eastbound I-70 ramp to southbound I-435 for a period of time while the fire department and as MoDOT crews assisted in clearing the scene.

The driver of the truck was taken to a hospital to be checked out but according to Police he was alert and walked to the ambulance so he is not thought to be seriously injured.

Two Vehicle Crash Leads to Death of Elderly Man

On Friday afternoon, April 8, an elderly man died in a two vehicle crash on the south side of Kansas City.

According to Kansas City police, the accident happened at around 3.30 p.m. when Rodolfo Geaga, aged 89 and of Kansas City was driving a Toyota pickup truck eastbound and was at a stop sign at Summit and Ward Parkway. He then pulled out from the stop sign into the intersection in front of a Jeep travelling southbound and they collided.

He was taken to hospital with serious injuries and passed away on Wednesday afternoon, April 13.

The driver of the Jeep was not hurt.

According to the police, this is the 13th traffic fatality in Kansas City this year compared to 11 at this time in 2015.

Young Man Killed in a Rollover Accident

Late on Tuesday night, a young man was killed in a rollover accident in Belton.

According to Belton police the accident happened shortly before midnight near the entrance ramp to northbound Interstate-49 from MO 58-Hwy.

Police believe that a vehicle being driven by 23 year old Grant White of Kansas City, Missouri fell down the embankment from the northbound entrance ramp. It flipped several times as it rolled down the embankment and then caught fire. Several bystanders tried to rescue the driver, who was alone in the vehicle; however, the flames were so strong they were unable to approach the vehicle sufficiently close to be able to provide any help.

White, who used to live in Belton, died at the scene

The cause of the accident is still unknown and is under investigation.
