On Friday, September 11, an off duty Kansas City firefighter was killed in a motorcycle crash.
According to police, the accident happened at approximately 7.15 p.m. at East 89th Street and Troost Avenue. Michael Daniels and the driver of an Range Rover were both travelling southbound on Troost with Daniels in the outside lane, while the Range Rover was in the inside lane. The vehicles were side by side when, for reasons unknown, the Range Rover swerved into Daniels’ lane hitting him. Police have confirmed that Daniels was wearing a crash helmet and was taken to Research Medical Center where he later died from his injuries.
Affectionately known as Mickey Dee to his friends, The Black Professional Firefighters of Kansas City, MO said Daniels was a funny inspiring and heroic public servant that touched all who knew him. A memorial has been set up at the crash site.
The driver of the Range Rover was taken into custody for questioning and was not injured. Policy investigations into the crash are still continuing.
